Miki Conn tells stories from the African Diaspora -- from the myths and legends of Africa to the tales of the various countries where Africans were taken as slaves. The Africans created new lives and merged their old stories with legends of the native populations aa well as those of slave owners, creating new stories, grounded in the old beliefs. These stories continue to be told today and are relevant to our everyday lives. They help us to understand the beliefs, values and aspirations of our ancestors and how many of our current values are rooted in our history. Miki has been tellling stories since she was a child, but “came out” as a storyteller in 1998 when she filled in for a friend who was a storyteller. Miki tells stories to people of all ages and will tailor her program to suit individual needs. She often combines song, singing games and crafts with her stories. Miki has told stories at: Arbor Hill Elementary School, Albany; Central Park Middle School, Schenectady; Pleasant Valley School, Schenectady; Hamilton School, Schenectady; Columbia- Greene Community College; Hamilton Hill Arts Center; Kwanzaa Program, sponsored by Hamilton Hill Arts Center & NYS Cultural Center; NYS Dept. Of Health Conference in Syracuse; NYS Department of Public Service for Women’s History Month; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; The Women’s Building; and private parties and events. |
