History of the Riverway Storytelling Festival
Riverway Storytelling Festival began in November 2001, when Mary Fellows and Betsy Soares met to brainstorm possible collaborations between their organizations, Upper Hudson Library System and Albany Public Library.
Out of this meeting came an idea for a community storytelling festival centered around public libraries, a vision for how it might look, and a plan for another meeting of all the stakeholders they could identify.
Gathering one frozen morning in January 2002, these stakeholders sparked the energy to turn vision into reality. Among them were the storytellers and community leaders who would become the core midwives at the birth of Riverway Storytelling Festival 15 months later in April 2003.
From a tricky but lively beginning during the worst spring ice storm in years, Riverway Storytelling Festival has grown to become a respected regional storytelling festival. Each year we offer storytelling concerts, workshops, story swaps, and showcases that introduce and advance the art of storytelling to hundreds of people from 6 to 76.
