Stories in books and stories shared orally - both are valuable and both have places in libraries and classrooms. When (and how) do stories move from the oral tradition of storytelling to the printed page? Storytellers and authors Joe and Jesse Bruchac explore the challenges of translating oral language to written language, drawing from their own experiences of creating books from stories in the American Indian tradition. When Stories Are Broken
Bill Harley

(518) 458-9274
William K. Sanford Town Library, Colonie

Sometimes we have a story that we feel should be good, but it just doesn't work. This is the most painful thing of all, because it's hard to know what to do with something that is only half alive. In this workshop, we'll look at some common reasons why stories do not work, and come up with some strategies for fixing them. Most of the work will not be about storytelling style, or performance technique, but problems related to the story itself. In the workshop, everyone will have a chance to work in small groups on one of their stories, and we'll do some whole group work on selected stories. Participants should bring one story they have been working on that has problems.
For intermediate and advanced tellers.
